Mustang Boss 302S Design
Like the reborn 2012 Cobra Jet Mustang, the 2012 Boss 302S is the fruit of Ford Racing’s labor, and is essentially a ready-to-race machine. As it stands, the car is eligible to compete in both the SCCA World Challenge GTS and NASA American Iron road racing series, much like the previous FR500 model.
Predictably, the 302S isn’t much different than the already-potent road car. Power still comes from the tweaked 5.0-liter V-8, which produces nearly 444 horsepower. Like the Laguna Seca edition, 302S cars receive a front splitter (now an adjustable design), adjustable suspension, and a 3.73:1 limited-slip rear differential, but the 302S goes a step further to prepare the Mustang for competition duty.
Mustang Boss 302S Interior
While the Laguna Seca model strips the interior of rear seats, the 302S does without much of an interior. Most trim panels, sound deadener, and other creature comforts are ripped from the car in an effort to save weight. In their place, however, is a six-point roll cage, Recaro race seat, a six-point harness, and a removable steering wheel. A giant carbon fiber decklid spoiler is specific to the 302S, as is the lithe, ventilated fiberglass hood and functional front tow hook.
Mustang Boss 302S Engine
Like the Cobra Jet, production of the Boss 302S is limited to 50 cars, although assembly won’t begin until the second quarter of 2011. Ford says pricing for the Boss 302S will start at $79,000 twice that of a stock 302, but not too shabby for a car that is ready to rumble right off the bat.
